we got to the white eagle ballroom late to purposly miss the first band, FOE, and ended up missing most of Brick Layer Cake. i think this was a good thing. they seemed to be very droning and i wasn't in the mood for droning music. especially in the white eagle ballroom.
i think half the wierdness that night came from the white eagle ballroom. i felt like i was 50 and i was at some wierd punk bingo game. the place is very similar to an elks club or something. there was a small bar in the back and lots of tables set up on the floor for worcester punks to sip their beers at. disco ball on the ceiling. my mind was doing flip flops. "This is an elks club, you shouldn't be here, but there are punks. AGGGGHHH."
shorty got on next. i'm not to familiar with the touch & go sound. in fact i was so unfamiliar with it i didn't know it existed until i was informed about it a week after the show by someone telling me shorty had 'the touch & go sound'. whatever that is i like it. heavy heavy bass shit. sounded what i would expect "grunge" to sound like. the guys in the audience liked it, the girls didn't seem to dig it. the vocalist was definatly the most interesting shit tho. he reminds me of one of the guys from 'weekend at bernies' all hopped up on too much coke. one minute he would stand there looking perplexed with the mic in his pocked, the next he would be shreiking at the top of his lungs. i'm gonna try to get their 7" if i can...
Kustomized started out good. their vocalist and guitarist has a lot of energy. the first two songs were ok, then they went down hill. i sorta tuned out after they started to bore me.
[another pic coming]
Worcester punks are so fucking violent. the one good thing about el pit was that at least people have style as they kick your ass. i wanted to do my little dance thing but i spent a lot of time trying to keep my shit together.
Shellac are even better live. they set up as close to the stage as possible. their sound is very similar to big black (duh!) but it's cool to see all the facial expressions and shit. Steve Albini has that guitar waist strap thing which was neat. if you haven't heard 'em yet, they are very heavy on base and do a lot of the stop/go/stop/go type of rythyms. the guitar is very 'tinny' with the distortion cranked.
so, after the show i go up to ask Steve Albini if he want's a copy of the show, as i taped it. he gets bummed out and lays out this story about shitty big black boots selling for $40 (people who pay $40 for any boot deserve to be ripped off, duh!). so i tell him i won't go out pressing vinal or anything. it ended up with me giving him the tape and him getting my address to send me a copy. yeah right... oh well, my friend taped the show too. neener neener.
